Pump Horsepower Ratings: Don’t be fooled by the two different methods that spa manufacturers use to rate pump horsepower. It’s important to understand these methods in order to compare one brand of spa to another.
- Continuous-Duty Horsepower: Continuous-Duty Horsepower is the maximum horsepower a given
motor will develop and maintain continuously without exceeding temperature limits for the class
of insulation used. In other words, this is the horsepower at which the pump runs continuously.
- Brake Horsepower: Brake horsepower refers to the output expended upon immediate initialization of the pump(s). Once a pump has progressed through its initial, spiked output (just a few seconds) it then levels out and performs at a more efficient and continuous duty output rating. A good analogy is when you turn on a light bulb. It takes about 15 minutes worth of energy to initialize, yet once it’s on, the light stabilizes and runs at a consistent and much more efficient rating.
To help you compare spa pumps of different spa brands, Villeroy & Boch publishes both the brake horsepower rating (BHP) as well as the continuous duty rating (HP). Understand that comparing Villeroy & Boch Spas’ pump horsepower with the horsepower of other brands is not a fair comparison because you aren’t comparing apples to apples - Villeroy & Boch Spas have significantly less plumbing, have a more efficient plumbing system and are therefore designed completely different from all other spa brands. As a result you should be more concerned with the following:
- The number of jets that can run per each pump horsepower.
- The sensation produced by each jet.
- The water pressure produced by each jet.
- The amount of water flow produced by each jet.
- The AMP-draw of the pump motor.
Horsepower Misrepresentation:
Many manufacturers misrepresent their horsepower rating by only
stating the highest horsepower rating and then by not labeling it as “Brake” horsepower. This may
lead the consumer to believe that this horsepower rating is the continuous-duty horsepower rating.
For example, two manufactures may use the exact same pump in their spas. One company might
advertise the pump at 4.8HP while the other might advertise it 2.0HP – yet these two pumps are the
exact same pumps from the same pump manufacturer. In addition, some manufacturers add another
level of misrepresentation by rounding the horsepower ratings up to some higher number, which
only further inflates the deception. Villeroy & Boch discloses both the “Brake” and “Continuous-Duty”
horsepower ratings and does not inflate these numbers. Both are accurate and true ratings.
56-Frame Pump Motors:
Villeroy & Boch’s pumps use a 56-frame motor. Most spa manufacturers use
the less effective, 48-frame motor. There are multiple benefits to using 56-frame motors:
